Pushing "PAUSE" on the Weekly Updates : The Editors, News and Views

We have decided to suspend our weekly publication of the Update.

However, we will continue to post correspondence and articles to our website xunicefnewsandviews.blogspot.com.

We urge our readers to continue sending us their news and views for publication on the website.

Please also continue to check the website for the latest information about XUNICEF.

Why are we suspending publication?

Answer 1: There is little point in us republishing material already sent by email to all members.

We have appealed repeatedly to members to stop addressing correspondence to "allmembers@xunicef.com"

-   instead, to send them to us for publication on the website and in the weekly updates.
OR
-  address messages to all as BCC:  rather than To:

Even worse, when members reply to such a message, they press 'Reply all" rather than replying just to the sender.  Please remember that in sending a reply, especially ones confirming participation in an event, thanking or agreeing with someone on their message, you should reply to the sender only - not to the entire membership.

Sadly, the flow of messages addressed to all members and replies copied to all members has continued unabated.  The present wave began with the Trivia questions and responses.  But it continued even after with members who wanted to share their memories of people with whom they worked, issues over preferences given certain regions or nationalities, and so forth.

Answer 2: We are losing members over the volume of emails they are receiving.

In the past few days alone five members have asked to have their email addresses removed from XUNICEF.

Our latest counts indicate that XUNICEF's membership consists of just under 500 members. This represents a very small proportion of the total number of retirees and other former staff throughout the world. We should be increasing the numbers who join XUNICEF. Instead, we are losing them.

We have pointed to frequent complaints from some members who do not want to receive messages that are not of interest or relevant to them.

Look - we get it ! Some members want to share their views immediately and want to see responses immediately by email. Waiting for the weekend to see the article or opinion published does not fill that desire for immediacy.

For this reason we will explore creating a bulletin board system similar to the old "Yesterday's Children" network on which members could post their thoughts directly and see responses immediately. Setting up such a system may take us a while. We will keep you posted.
